Penny Rugs

A penny rug is an excellent addition to any home that loves a bit of nostalgia of how settlers created wonderful throws, pillows, wall hangings and decorative table toppers.

As you read the article on penny rugs in the article section, you can see how real homesteader made them. Like many things, time has changed the authenticity of the penny rug into other beautiful items that are now also called a penny rug.  Change can be a good thing as you will see in the wonderful penny rugs of today.

Folk Art Penny Rugs

An example of rug style change is the folkart penny rugs. Older handiwork crafters knew this type of handiwork as appliqué art, but with the need to market product, came a campaign, which boasted the additional appliqué as genuine penny rugs.

The truth be told, our grandmothers and great-grandmothers incorporated many of the same stitches used today to their pieces. Each one had a specific term to describe which stitch or shape was used to finish their work of art.

Penny Rug art is incredibly fun and often times tells a story along with the pennies that can be found among the artwork. Unfortunately, many of the pattern designers today are forgetting to add the pennies in their designs, which really turns the work into appliqué art and not penny rug art.

We are including many wonderful finds, which represent all styles of the penny rug craft that are know to us today.  All of them are fun, pretty and useful in one way or another.
